Close quarter defense requires different tactics than defense from a distance.
In close quarters, you can not rely entirely on your firearm, but on a combination of hand combat and firearm use. Distractions and combative forces can give you the split-second advantage to keep yourself safe.
This series is a collection of self-defense tips with career law enforcement officer Dave Spaulding, designed to help individuals learn proper skills and techniques to defend themselves. Spaulding has worked in all facets of law enforcement and was a founding member of his agency's SWAT Team. He was also the commander of a multi-agency narcotics task force that included local, state and federal investigators. Most recently, he received the 2010 Trainer of the Year Award by Law Officer Magazine.

i suggest you use the neck.. it is easier to strike than the eyes, and you can easily make permanent damage, and probably the best part: it takes a good ammount of time for the person to recuperate...

If a robber has a gun pointing at you up close (often right at your chest or forehead) they will most likley shoot if we upset them. If you project fear, they will shoot so act loving. Often, if you give them the money they'll leave. I have $5, $10, and lots $1bills rolled up like tootsie rolls. If they don't leave then defend yourself in a justified way.

I think a dart to the eyes of the opponent might be the best option. Extend fingers out like a dart, and thrust directly into their eyes with your support hand, while drawing with your main hand. You nail anyone in the eyes, youll disorient them at least.
Unlimited variables. Just practice a lot... To be honest, if you are running up against some hand to hand pro, youre in A LOT of trouble. He may just grab your arm as you extend it, take you down, break you arm, take your weapon..

your comments and some might even think they are good. However, based on my real world experience and the experiences of the hundreds of combatants that I have interviewed while conducting my research into conflict, what you say here and under other tips will get people hurt, prosecuted, sued or killed. I would caution readers before they take reb618's advice. PLEASE think before taking ill-concieved advice from someone you don't know. My background/experience is an open book...choose wisely.

reb618, Before I responded I had a number of my associates from the military, law enforcement and training communities review your comments. No one agreed with your thoughts. What I have put into these tips are based on 30 years of LE experience including undercover operations and SWAT, so I have faced adversity. I have struck numerous people in the face as I described here, three times guarding agaibst a gun grab, and never experienced what you describe. You certainly have the right to post

I had an encounter at a taco stand one day. A suspicious male approached me, and I backed up. He asked for money, I showed my weapon, and ordered him to remove his hands from his pocket. You think I over reacted? His head swiveled around to see who was looking before he approached me, and is why I reacted. And good thing too. As I drove off, him and three gang bangers were flashing gang signs at me.
Use common sense, and pay attention to people's behavior and your surroundings.

You really should never end up in close quarters with an armed adversary. If you did, you did not pay attention to your surrounds. Also there is no mention of "hands". When someone strange is approaching you, don't fixate on their face as is natural. Watch their hands. Hands ... hands ... hands. When they reach, you reach ... you see a weapon coming out ... shoot.
It's all very basic people.
