Would you be able to tell what notes you're playing at 1.38-1.40? I really like that kind of riff but I can never figure it out because it's always too fast. I'd really appreciate it.

@tmtperchloricacid I think he bought it! Leblanc professional series altos come with this type of neck. Probably no other alto. Or are there any other brands that have it this way?

How did you get an alto clarinet with a curved head joint like a bass clarinet?

@Fumbles9001 In large bands, however, there is generally only one alto clarinet being used among a large section of Bb Sopranos. This would be similar to a saxophone section of 12 altos with one tenor (Lord help us all!). In this case, the tenor's color would be lost in contrast to a balanced section of 2 Altos, 1 Tenor, and 1 Bari. An ideally balanced section of 12-16 clarinet players would be 1 Eb Sopanino, 2 1st, 2-3 2nd, 2-4 3rd, 2 Altos, 2 Bass, 1 Eb contra alto, and 1 Bb Contra Bass.

@Fumbles9001 Well, its like the article said. The clarinet family is similar in concept to the saxophone family consisting of the Bb Soprano, Eb Alto, Bb Tenor, Eb Bari, and Bb Bass. In each case, the ranges easily overlap allowing one to skip an instrument with no loss of notes (as you said). The real loss is color. However, some people don't say they hear color difference with or without an Alto Clarinet. However, this is the product of balance if anything.

@WenchesOfRedemption You're right, I understand that a good quality instrument when put into the hands of a good player probably sounds great. Nonetheless, I don't really see a practical application when those parts can be covered by the soprano and bass. I see it being applied in clarinet choirs, but that's about it.

@Fumbles9001 I am currently playing an alto clarinet for my clarinet choir, and I can get it to play pretty loud. Common knowledge tip: The only poor alto's are ones that are kept in bad shape, one that is made of an inferior brand maker, or one being used by an unskilled player.
Even if I can't get it to play loud, guess what? Loud isn't important (unless you are in the Chicago philharmonics or a marching bad setting) and it doesn't add to the grace and beauty that can come with an alto.

@WenchesOfRedemption I'm sure there are people out there who can make the shittiest instrument in the world sound good. I'm not saying that the alto clarinet is a shit instrument. I like playing it, it's fun and sounds pretty good, it's just that it's hard to tune, it isn't very loud, and with instruments with large ranges like the bass clarinet and soprano clarinet, there's not really a need for an in-between instrument.

@JoeGancher Not sure I remember the brand but they are alto sax reeds. Probably 3 or 3.5.
They could be old Gaurdella's.

Hey, I'm about to go to all-state on alto clarinet (I live in the hardest region in Texas, so it's not like I got there by default like most). We have a Leblanc Vito that's practically broken in half, and then my little Selmer at my school. I have A C* mouthpiece but the instrument is still the typical alto clarinet. I sound pretty good with what I have, but I wish I had a nicer alto. my dad said that he may buy me a good one though..
Any recommendations?

@tatertot1033 Hi The only alto I've ever played is the Leblanc I own so I can't help with recommending other instruments but I think there may be more Leblanc's available used. My wood one is really well made.
btw the other alto clarinet videos I did all sound better then this one. I think I sound pretty crappy on this one.
I may take it down.
