Gillespie Has Game Beyond his Years

Levy Gillespie has grown up playing against older kids and hes now beginning to reap the rewards.

When the New England Recruiting Report got our first look at Levy Gillespie he was a rising 6th grader and one of the youngest players at our first ever Junior Elite event, the Stars of Tomorrow camp.

We distinctly remember that while Gillespie wasnt necessarily on the same level physically as some of the older kids, he was none the less able to hold his own.

In the two plus years that have passed, Gillespie has changed quite a bit. Hes stretched out his frame, grown into his body, and further developed his skills and basketball I.Q. What hasnt changed is his ability to hold his own against players two and three years his senior.

Gillespie is about to enter his 8th grade season at Capitol Prep, a magnet school in the city of Hartford which features both a high school and a middle school. The five-foot-ten guard stars with the middle school team during the school season but plays with the high school group during fall and summer leagues.

Gillespie has also been proving his worth on the AAU scene for the last several years, starring with the Connecticut Basketball Club. His CBC teams have won the Connecticut AAU Division I championship in three of the last four years. At this past years AAU nationals, he led the fourteen-and-under team in scoring with an average of 10 points per game, with his best performance coming against J-Smoove with six three-pointers and 18 points. Last years CBC team also took titles at the Hall of Fame Junior Nationals and Spring Classic while earning a record of 35-7 on the season. Gillespie picked up all-star and all-tournament nods in a number of tournaments and local leagues along the way.

When the New England Recruiting Report got the chance to watch Gillespie play last week what immediately stood out to us was his veteran feel for the game. His many years of playing with kids older than him have obviously paid off as he has terrific instincts, great savvy, and a super high understanding of the game. Combine that with a well rounded skill set and the lefty was burying three-pointers, making great decisions coming off ball screens, and controlling the flow of the entire game.

With still another year remaining before he officially joins the high school ranks it will be fun to watch this young player continue to develop and prove his ability.
