Elvis Presley Maybellene (Live 1955)
Written by Chuck Berry. Elvis sang Maybellene in concert and on the Louisiana Hayride quite often in 1955 and 1956. I have put August 20, 1955 on the title page as when this version was recorded, but truly I am not sure when it is was recorded because I have this version of the song on five CDs and they ALL have different dates on them. But Im pretty sure its August 1955, but it is not at the Louisiana Hayride because Elvis refers to the Hayride at the beginning. But I do have this same recording on Elvis at the Hayride (LOL); it is also available on The King of Rock n Roll-The Complete 50s Masters, Elvis the Missing Years, Elvis and Friends, and Elvis Historic Collection Vol. 3, which is where this version is from. Only this version has both the beginning and ending with Elvis talking.

Maybellene, why can't you be true?
Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true?
You've done started back doing the things you used to do.

There I was motivatin' over the hill
I saw Maybellene in a Coup de Ville.
A Cadillac a-rollin' on the open road,
Nothin' will outrun my V8 Ford.
The Cadillac doin' 'bout ninety-five,
And it was bumper to bumber rollin' side by side.

Maybellene, why can't you be true?
Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true?
You've done started back doing the things you used to do.

The Cadillac moved to a hundred and four
The Ford got hot and wouldn't do no more
It done got cloudy and started to rain
Tooted my horn in the passing lane
The rain water blowin all under my hood
I knew that was doin' my motor no good

Maybellene, why can't you be true?
Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true?
You've done started back doing the things you used to do.

Maybellene, why can't you be true?
Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true?
You've done started back doing the things you used to do.

The motor cooled down, the heat went down
And that's when I heard that highway sound.
The Cadillac a-sittin' like a ton of lead
A hundred and ten a half a mile ahead.
The Cadillac lookin' like it's sittin' still
And I caught Maybellene at the top of the hill.

Maybellene, why can't you be true?
Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true?
You've done started back doing the things you used to do.
You've done started back doing the things you used to do.

  • Did Elvis ever record this? apart from a live recording

  • No, Not as far as I know.

  • Im pretty sure its August 1955, but it is not at the Louisiana Hayride because Elvis refers to the Hayride at the beginning. • Jackie, wich is the video where Elvis down a stairways dressing in a red sute?

    Thanks

  • I'm not sure which you mean. Elvis wore a red suit in the 1968 Special; I made the Gospel Medley with some of those pics. Is that it?

  • "I'm too pooped to pop" D:

  • @jmallton "Chuck stole this song from a country artist by the name of Bob Wills" Chuck has stolen material (e.g. "I Got To Find My Baby" was really by Peter Clayton), but imo "Maybellene" isn't a significant example, really doesn't sound much like "Ida Red."

  • Way take Marty Robbins down a few pegs for stealing "That's All Right". Marty recorded this around the same time, and it bugged Elvis that Marty ripped off his first recording and made a bigger hit out of it. I personally prefer Chuck Berry's original but Elvis is still awesome!

  • @Jackiej61too This song wasn't really written by Chuck Berry. It is a fact that the arrangement was taken from Cowboy Bob Wills arrangement of "Ida Red"......Berry simply changed the lyrics and stole the arrangement.....google it

  • great cover

  • Hahah.

    "But but but but..wha- YEAH"

    lol Hes so cute XD

  • Please enlighten me: I recently met someone who claimed they went to school with Elvis, soo you can imagine i was excited and wanted info. Well I was told that he was super duper handsome and shy. But what struck me was that she said he ran away to hollywood when he was 14 and obviously came back. I personally think its bull because its never been mentioned before.

  • bu bu but but but, yea... :D

  • SO CUTE!!!! :D

  • This song is NOT a Chuck Berry original.....Chuck stole this song from a country artist by the name of Bob Wills......Bob had a song called "Ida Red" ....Chuck copied most of the song and put in different lyrics and called his version "Maybelliene".....Chuck admitted ot this years after he released "Maybellienee"
