Adideva3 my friend this is not s mockery of the Hindu scriptures. Is a way of educating ignorant Westerners (like myself) about the beauty of your culture. The multi-race casting made this epic accessible, easier for me to comprehend. After watching this I have nothing but respect for Hinduism.
It has exposed many of us in the West to a great piece of spiritual literature we would have never known, more than likely, otherwise. My husband and I have watched it many times and never tire of it. We are now talking about reading the original, in English, of course, together.
I'm a hindu and i very much appreciated this version. As any learned hindu would tell you, Mahabaratham is an epic poem which contained in it the Gita. Mahabaratham itself isn't scripture or holy. Any hindu who would view it as the word of god doesn't have any knowledge of Indian oral history(upanishads, thirukural) or even Hinduism itself. As a hindu growing up in the Canada, my parents encouraged me to watch this very series which ignited my lifelong desire to learn about Hinduism.
I think he did a good job. First time I saw it I was a little dissapointed, after reading the original, incomparable work. But later, I saw the dignity and insight that is brought out. And the multi-racial cast was a stroke of genius, since this is a story of universal applicarion. Bhishma rocks.
