This is Jane from Jakarta. I am about to perform this for Independence Day celebrations at school and couldn't remember some of the steps. I am dancing with a teacher from Bali but her style is a little different. We are sooo grateful that you posted this to remind us how to dance Panyembrama. I can't believe that it is 15 years ago that you and I used to dance this together in Sydney with the gamelan at the museum. Please look me up on Facebook. I'm janeinjava :-)

Beautiful dancing and music. We have just had our first holiday in Bali and were very taken by the culture and the people, Over our two week stay we found the Balinese people were, without exception, friendly and very welcoming.
matu suksuma (I think that means thank you!)

Tari Pendet was traditionally a temple purification dance danced by pre-pubescent girls who were not necessarily trained dancers, but were taught by older women through imitation. Over time it diversified into a temple welcome dance. Panyembrama is a secular version of Pendet, used to generally welcome people to Bali. Balinese dance has evolved and changed much over the last century, especially since ongoing contact with foreigners.
