@S2HVU The one he "threw" away and crushed him.. To the unthinking: this passage gave insight to the genius that was to pour forth..oh and the majestic 4th movevement

@jannokas85 I couldn't agree more. After only knowing the second symphony, I was bowled over when I heard this for the first time

I `m reading a book of Rachmaninoff now and this symphony failed in San-Petersburg. It was very hard for him.

Sometimes you hear things, which cant be worse. Its like a baby where you ALWAYS say ooooh how sweet and not whats a peace of meat is it? This masterpiece have so much romantic, so much melody, so much.................... Its, Its just someting not from this world, if I am going out in the city !!!!
Rachmaninov is realy one of the biggest assets of Humaniy !!!

The story of the Rach's first symphony is a good lesson for all aspiring artists. Don't let the opinions of others be the standard by which you judge yourself. Rock on Rach!

@jannokas85 ... and Glazunov's conducting, apparently. Odd, that, as Glazunov's own 'The Seasons' is an attractive but complex piece needing careful exposition itself. You'd have thought he'd know better.

Dios mio esta sinfonía es increible, en los últimos 4 minutos me vuelvo loco
-
Cesar Cui was an enemy of Rachmaninov since before the fiasco.
-
Alexander Glazunov is a big fool.
I can't believe THIS failed... 8(

This is not only a great Romantic masterpiece, but also a proof of Rachmaninov's genius and of his powerful melodic gift! It wasn't this composition that was a big failure, but instead the distorted perceptions of those highly opinionated critics!
