Two melancholy folk songs from Finland..

On suuri sun rantas autius (How lonely is your shore) arr. by Matti Hyökki, and

Läksin mina kesäyönä käymään (And I walked the vales) arr. by Einar Englund.

Adolf Fredrik's Girls Choir, cond. Bo Johansson.

Paintings by Theodor Kittelsen (1857-1914) "Soria Moria",

and Albert Edelfelt (1854-1905).

I thank the artists! I hope they will not mind me making this video :)

---------------------

How lonely is your shore
and how I yearn for there
how the wild duck´s lament
lingers in the air.

Some lost and lonely bird
it rails against the chill
wanders through the reed-beds long
motherless, forlorn.

Your slate-grey waves I've watched
through eyes that fill with tears
I wept my first by your shore
and my youth comes back to me.

Your image deep is graven
I long for there once more
many is the night I've listened
for the mallard's call offshore.
--------------

And I walked the vales with heavy steps
seeing the sun and listening to the birds
The trush sings sadly to me
his song heals all my pain
The wondrous peace and stillness of night
disperses my bitter grief

  • i just discovered this video, again thank you xamandine for widening my musical horizons. i will most definetely listen to the other ones you have posted (i also commented on jan lundren's "magnum mysterium", which i bought quite by accident a few years back). my roots are cuban and italian and i live in france, but my two trips to scandinavia influenced and "affected" me in a very positive musical way, these songs are very beautiful and melancholic, thank you for sharing.

  • @h1zchan I think they sing a part in Finnish and a part in Swedish

  • amazing!

  • @SugarCookied Yes they arranged them from traditional songs, I’m not sure abot the lyrics.

  • @xAmandine Ohhhh, ok! :) So is it only those specific arrangements that were done by those composers, not the lyrics themselves?

  • @SugarCookied Thank you for your comment! I think with folk songs no one can tell who wrote them or when.

  • When were these songs written? They are very beautiful.
