I think Hurd is a great and brilliant leader who made some bad choices. Let us not push aside his contributions to both HP and the industry. As for his boat load of cash recevied for exiting, I think these were more than likely negotiated Pre-Hiring. The performance numbers don't lie. Just my .02

NEVER buy an HP PC!!!! Their customer service is appalling, they will make promise after promise and never deliver. There are plenty of options out there that will save you the heartache of dealing with these people.
