If xöömii (khöömi) is a new word to you, just remind yourself that all the vocal sounds came from one man and it was not overdubbed. The whistling sound is indeed vocal. Tserendavaa is a Mongolian master of that singing art. He is accompanied in this recording on a morin xuur (馬頭琴). The recording originated from the archives of Mongol Radio.

The picture is taken from the site announcing London Mongolian Khöömii festival July 19th and 20th 2011.

I assume it is a picture of Tserendavaa.

  • People interseted in throat singing should try the 1999 documentary Genghis Blues. Paul Pena, a blind blues singer from San Francisco, learned throat singing on his own. He impressed a visiting Tuvan group so much that he was invited to a throating singing competetion in Tuva. He was greeted with great enthusiasm and won an award. Not only do you hear a lot of singing from Paul and Tuvan natives, but you also see quite a bit of Tuva. Netflix has it.

    Sadly Paul died in 2005.
