Ah... Bshoot's just never been the same for me after that year; DeathCab was pretty close but this year was just lacking!

Unfortunately the audio accompanying this video does not do the actual performance justice. This was one of the best live performances I have ever seen. I was probably just left of the person recording this and I was simply memorized.

hmm.. it makes me appreciate the 1973 Dark Side of the Moon version even more. I like that they do it, but the Shins lack connection to that perfect album. Any one can do a cover, but a connection is more than playing and singing. Please understand, I am not putting down the Shins. But this is like U2 singing Depeche Mode.. just doesn't work for me.

Duuuude, I totally disagree. Breathe goes right along with a lot of the humanist themes the Shins present in their music. U2 and Depeche Mode are two completely different bands with not much in common. But I feel like Mercer and the Shins are among the few that actually truly appreciate and "connect" with Pink Floyd's music.

Ethan, I went back and re-watched the video. Perhaps in a studio setting I would feel the connection that they had with the song. I don't know them personally, all I could do was give my comment based on the feeling I had while watching. Perhaps U2 to Depeche mode was a bad example. But I didn't feel the magic of that particular song with that band. But it might have been the outdoor venue.

This is pretty cool. Mercer sounds a lot like an American Gilmour here. If I ever get to see the Shins in person I hope they do this cover. Speaking of which, why do they do so few shows?

in musical terms...I can do it...but I don't want to. I like to hear my favorite music just like it was made

That's reasonable. It's just hard to criticize another band cover a favorite of yours if you wouldn't enjoy ANY band doing it. Don't you think you're being a little critical?
