@Fizmoo it would suck if everything would be held in the me year becuz, we would watch EURO and WC in the same year and for the next 4 years there would be no major tournaments that has to do with international teams

Because the euro's are too big to be hold in the same year as the World Cup. Now they share the same (prime) time in june and are more seen as 'equal' as a world cup eg. both important tournaments. A tournament every 2 years like copa america & africa cup make it less special. All big tournaments (olympics, world cup) are every 4 year. If it's more rare, it's more special.

@jed1540 I believe most of them hold their tournaments in the odd-numbered years. Africa doesn't, but they hold their tournaments in the winter time. Europe can't do this because their leagues are all in mid-season by then. The clubs would never allow it. Additionally, the clubs won't want their European-blood players going off to major tournaments 3 out of every 4 years. 2 out of 4 is more than enough for the Arsene Wenger's and Sir Alex's of the world.
