We are Dad by Michel Horvat

Nominated for Best Documentary at the 2006 GLAAD Media Awards, WE ARE DAD is the story of a gay couple who are pediatric AIDS nurses that become foster parents to infants who are HIV positive, and decide to challenge the State of Florida's law banning adoption by gay people.

The film follows the lives of a most unusual family: Two white HIV negative gay men and their family of five kids. Four of them have AIDS, three are black, two come from a backwater cult in Oregon, and one of the children has been in the middle of one of the most hotly debated issues in this country: gay adoption. We follow these delightful men through the highs and lows of their 18 year struggle to raise this amazing family.

While the facts may be grim, theirs is a family full of joy and laughter, bustling with activity, while a well-honed sense of irony keeps them all healthy, happy and immune from those who would have them disbanded. People are constantly surprised by the amount of laughter and joy that comes out of the theatres presenting this film. These two gay men have raised their five HIV positive children for the last 17 years, but after being everything to these kids, the two dads are not able to adopt them. Why? Because the State of Florida has a complete ban on gay adoption. Stupid bigots! Two spirits make very good parents! Their view does not belong on this land (and its imported)! Love is a two way street that is never evil hate is always evil! Go run behind god if you want but how could a loving god hate any love?

Why? I know many heterosexuals raised by straight parents who are filled with hate. These Dads were raising African-American Children who were born HIV Poz. Do you know how many HIV negative African-American kids were lost in the system in FL, NY, IL and many other states in the 1960s, 70s, 80s, and 90s? I do... It is better for them to have two men who have a history of caring for kids society don't notice & makes little effort to care about.
