this clip is from the PBS mini-series "On the Trail of Mark Twain with Peter Ustinov"-- made in honor of the anniversary of Mark Twain's book "Following the Equator."
Sir Peter Ustinov follows in Twain's footsteps a century later.
I visited Kaluapapa in the 1970's and met the impressive Richard(?) who was their representative and featured in an edition of the Audubon magazine. I was greatly moved by his manner and love for his people. I met many with Hansen's disease and found them delightful, dignified and gracious. I learned a lot abut this cruel disease, none of it complimentary about white people. I learned there were colonies at that time in the major N.American cities. A memorable and life-shaping experience.
