Appearing on the ABC programme Q & A on 5 April, Leader of the Opposition, Tony Abbott, was asked a question about a republic by one Alex James: Mr Abbott, between 1993 and 1994 you were the executive director for the Australians for a Constitutional Monarchy. Im just wondering, does your future vision for Australia involve any kind of republican model. (Play the video above or see the transcript segment below.)

This question was clearly programmed to be the last question from the audience in the near hour long programme. Once answered, Mr. Jones then added a prepared follow-up question based on Peter Costellos memoirs.

This was to be the coup de grâce. It would show that as the first Director of ACM, Tony Abbott was actually a republican.

And if this could be demonstrated, he would then be shown to be unreliable, untrustworthy and deceitful.

Nice try Mr. Jones, but it didnt work.

  • How was that a trap?

  • @dickinsonstarkey true true.

  • Well I must admit, I do agree that I would be a bit uncertain with a Republic, I mean when I think of the USA, and the way that "free" country treats its poor...

  • Excellent speaker and one I personally admire is Tony Abbot. He earnestly deserves honest support and wider public favour. He correctly points out the Crown has given much to the Commonwealth and an effective open and fair justice system.Look at any republic across the globe, and see bloodshed and violence.Pick any republic and see what a messy system of governance it actually is,USA a clear example,China,or the Congo .
