A two day visit to the wilds of Knoydart.

Music: Alba from the album Long Distance (The Best of Runrig) 1996

We hiked into the remote peninsular of Knoydart in June 2006. The only way to the area is a 13km hike along a narrow path to the north of the peninsular or a ferry to the south side. Even the road to the start of the path is pretty spectacular.

We camped at Barrisdale overnight (close to the bothy - as requested by the estate) with about 4 or 5 other tents. I think there was about 4 folks in the bothy too, but when we walked up the hill on Sunday we only saw one other person the whole day! It was good to have time to potter about in the evening, enjoying the sunshine and relaxing - until the midges descended on the place.

The next day the weather was not so good, but still fair and looking good to tackle Ladhar Bheinn. We followed an obvious path up into Coire Dhorrcail then climbed up to the ridge on the rim of the corie. We had a bit of low cloud on the summit and this hid the views back down and a along the ridge a little. We descended the easterly ridge - Stob na Muicraidh; this route was a wee bit steep at the very top but nothing serious. It was mainly a long, steep grassy slope.

After returning to Barrisdale we grabbed a bite to eat before packing up. Before we've finished this, the midges descended and we were eaten alive, but once we got walking we escaped them.
