  • You are straining to see patterns where simpler explanations exist:

    1. Sam not mentioning his mother does not make her "a mystery" but an irrelevance.

    2. Sam turning away from Marion while he talks of his ex-wife does not indicate he is lying and to imagine that he has murdered her only tells us how your mind works.

    3. No one thinks that Norman, dressed as his mother, could represent Marion's mother. For heaven's sake.

    4. Hitchcock would hardly remove the mirror in the Arbogast scene. etc.

  • @OrodesIII You're assuming that simpler means more accurate. That's the Occam's Razor fallacy. I'm a film maker myself and have used all sorts of subliminal motifs in writing, directing and editing - sometimes in more complex ways than in this film analysis. The methods I use were learned from studying Hitchcock, Kubrick and Lynch. So go read their biographies and learn a thing or two.

  • You're good. How about the father figure? They are all orphans - Marion, obv. her sister, Sam, Norman... Marion has her boss as a father figure, and especially the guy who comes to buy the house for his daughter, and hints that Marion could "replace" his daughter to him. This is accentuated by Hitch adding his own daughter Patricia as Marion's colleague. I think the absence of father is very important in making Marion a victim, in our understanding why she's attracted to shady men, etc.

  • @dajcei Good stuff.

  • I like to see that not all hope has been lost on youtube. Im only 16 myself but i'm sick of seeing immature "trolls" commenting nonsense on videos, it appears that although this hasn't completely disappeared there are some good comments here!

  • Pleasant analysis, mainly because even if you don't agree with every point, Rob Ager doesn't present them in an imposing, self-righteous way. It's sad to read then commentaries going that way.

  • @robag88 As a filmmaker you should know all about projection. Projection is also a psychological term for a type of distorted thinking. You should learn a lot more about Hitchcock and Kubrick before you try to interpret their films. A lot of your analysis is just silly...

  • And what does the name Norman stand for? Normal Man? William the Conqueror? The meaning of Bates is obvious. I invite all Psycho fans (Psycho-tics?) to check out my original song tribute, "Here's To Alfred Hitchcock," right here on YouTube. Just click on my name below or search "CraigASilver."

  • @robag88

Excuse me for having an opinion that differs from you, given your knowledge and all.
