This video is the introduction to this project on how I mic my drums based on what I've learned over the past year.

***Higher quality audio***
Be sure to watch these videos in HD, because there is a significant improvement in sound quality over standard definition - however, YouTube's codec processing has recently started really muddying up the lower end frequencies (like the bass drum and floor toms), so HD sound is still not as good as the source file. Head to this link on Vimeo if you want to hear the drums at their best: http://vimeo.com/10361406

If you are already familiar with certain aspects of this tutorial, feel free to skip around to other parts using these links:

If you don't feel like listening to the introduction, or are already familiar with parts of drum recording that I'm covering, feel free to skip ahead to later parts:

Also, be sure to laugh at how dumb I sound from 0:43 - 0:49!

I hope you enjoy these videos, and more importantly I hope they help you become better at recording drums!

  • i'm kinda loving all the DT and LTE music in your vids man. not to mention the great advice

  • @TheNolanFest

I put a lot of time and effort into these videos, so I figured I'd do them justice by including nothing but the absolute best music out there! :)

  • I watched your whole series, and I really really liked these. Very informative and well thought out videos. Thanks for taking the time to do this, JD!

  • @SaenSaen1

I'm glad you liked them and more important, I'm glad they helped you out! Thanks for watching!

  • Hey, I'm doing a school project regarding recording. It's not in-depth and/or technical when it comes to the science behind microphones, but I want to give it a humorously long and complex title. Does "molecular dissonant electrons colliding with each microscopic phason configuraiton particle to synthesize a sympathetic tertiary rebound" actually make any sense? Haha.

  • @RedCl0ud22

The only part of that entire section that makes any sense is "phalanges," since I actually am holding it in my fingers. The rest were just the first big words that popped into my head so I wrote them down for the script of the video, lol.
