Oh yes, it's a sad and cruel story. But Jeremy's state of health, during this last performance, is not less tragic. when he asks: what is the meaning of this, watson? it must have a purpose, but what purpose?I always thought this question could applied, too, to his own cruel fate...

I agree! I think that every time I watch the end of Cardboard Box too. Jeremy was very happy with the last lines he ever uttered as Sherlock Holmes. Maybe he thought they were oddly fitting too? It seems all the way though SH certain things said were fitted with his own life. *sigh*
