A collection of sights and sounds from the preparation and opening by the SouthWest Organizing Project of a community garden in the International District of Albuquerque, NM. The opening took place on April 18th, 2010 and represented a collaboration between SWOP members, local community members, District 6 City Councilor Rey Garduño, gardening adviser Don Bustos, and SWOP's team of gardening experts.
The garden is part of the Project Feed The Hood initiative, which aims not only to provide food for the community, but also to educate around gardening and sustainability, and to promote conversations around larger community health issues.
SWOP Community Organizer Joaquín Luján worked with SWOP Organizer/Gardeners Rodrigo Rodriguez and Travis McKenzie to design the garden and implement a curriculum there around traditional gardening and sustainability. The garden is intended to serve as a model for community gardens all over Albuquerque and New Mexico.
