UPDATE!!! Atlanta Thrashers' goaltender Ondrej Pavelec has regained consciousness and is in stable condition in an Atlanta area hospital

ATLANTA -- Atlanta Thrashers goalie Ondrej Pavelec collapsed to the ice in the early minutes of the season-opening game against the Washington Capitals on Friday night.
The team said Pavelec, 23, lost consciousness and was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Thrashers officials released no other information on his condition.
There was a whistle at the opposite end of the ice when Pavelec suddenly fell over backward with no one around just 2:25 into the game. His teammates rushed to his aid and immediately called for doctors and a stretcher to be brought to the ice.
Medical personnel worked over him for about 10 minutes before he was wheeled off the ice.
The game resumed after a delay of about 20 minutes. Chris Mason took over in goal for the Thrashers and gave up a goal less than a minute later.
Even though they signed Mason over the summer, the Thrashers believed Pavelec had the potential to develop into the sort of top-flight goalie the team has lacked for its entire NHL history.
He signed a two-year deal in the offseason after going 14-18-7 with a 3.29 goals-against average and two shutouts in 42 games. It was his first full season in the NHL.
Pavelec also was a member of the Czech Republic's team at this year's Vancouver Olympics.
The native of Kladno made his league debut Oct 20, 2007, allowing a goal on six shots in one period. He was taken 41st overall by the Thrashers in the 2005 draft. For his career, he is 20-28-7 with two shutouts in 61 games.

Pavelec was drafted in the first round of the 2005 CHL Import Draft by the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles of the (QMJHL). He played two seasons with the club and helped them to a semi-final finish in the 2006--2007 season. Pavelec, the Atlanta Thrashers second-round pick in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft (41st overall), was a first team All-Star in each of his two seasons with Cape Breton, and won the Jacques Plante Trophy for best goals-against average both years, making him only the fourth player to repeat as Jacques Plante Trophy winner and the first in 20 years to do so (Robert Desjardins was the last). As a rookie he took home the Raymond Legacé Trophy and RDS Trophy, awarded to top defensive rookie and rookie of the year, respectively. His numbers were remarkably consistent over the two seasons, as he recorded GAAs of 2.51 in '05--06 and 2.52 last season, with save percentages of .929 and .908.
Pavelec led the Czech Republic Under-17 team to a second-place finish in the 2004 Junior World Cup, and the Under-18 squad to fourth place at the U-18 World Junior Cup. He was also the starting goalie for the Czech Republic U-20 team at the 2006 World Junior Hockey Championships.
Pavelec signed a pro contract with the Thrashers in 2007. On May 18, 2007, Pavelec shut out the Toronto Marlies 5-0 in the American Hockey League's Western Conference Finals. Pavelec also helped Chicago Wolves win the Calder Cup in the 2007-08 season.
After starting nine games for the Chicago Wolves in the 2008-2009 season, he was recalled to the NHL due to an injury to Kari Lehtonen. He played in his first NHL game on October 20, 2007. He made his first NHL start and picked up his first NHL win against the Tampa Bay Lightning on November 3, 2007. Pavelec was playing with the Atlanta Thrashers since being called up on November 1, 2008 until he was reassigned to the Chicago Wolves on December 19, 2008. He later returned to the Thrashers.
On October 8, 2010, Pavelec collapsed during a game against the Washington Capitals while there was a break in play at 2:25 into the first period. He was taken off the ice on a stretcher and taken to the hospital. No details have been released about his condition. [1]

  • @allghilliedup21 Because players like to play hockey game and often conceal concussion-like symptoms from their coaches.

  • IF he had a concussion the day before, why the hell would the coach put him in net the day later?

  • I remember this game. It was fucking scary.

  • You Asshole Man Your So Messed Up!!!!

  • @brodybryce you are a genuine dumbass. He had a fainting spell. It takes a while to recover from a faint.and you can't hit your head THAT hard when your a goalie unless you get checked.I know this, I used to BE a goalie.

  • @EdgeHeadTubeV2 Dude that's messed. : \

  • @xwavestr "It was determined after testing by doctors that the cause of his collapse was neurocardiogenic syncope, a type of fainting spell"

^ That's the official health report on him. It wasn't from a concussion, though it did lead to one.
