Nice police work, have to say.
A 46-year-old Warren mother has pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol after police say they pulled her over on I-75 in Troy with two children in the car and a blood-alcohol level nearly triple the legal limit.
Betty Jean Turner is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 9 in Oakland County Circuit Court.
Troy Police received three 911 calls from other motorists who saw Turner's red Ford Contour weaving and driving 90 m.p.h. southbound on I-75 near Adams at 5:45 p.m. Sept. 18, Troy Police Lt. Robert Redmond said today.
When police pulled her over near 14 Mile, they discovered her daughter and the daughter of a friend, ages 10 and 7, in the backseat. A breath test determined she had a .23 blood alcohol level, nearly three times Michigan's legal limit, Redmond said. "One of the children stated, 'She was speeding, so we were going to jump out of the car because we didn't want to die," Redmond said. Turner pleaded guilty in Oakland County Circuit Court to operating under the influence for the third time, this time with an occupant younger than 16 in the car, according to the circuit court clerk's office.
She is scheduled to be sentenced at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 9 by Judge Wendy Potts. A charge of operating while under the influence of liquor was dropped. She could be sentenced to up to 5 years in jail and fined up to $5,000 upon sentencing.
West Bloomfield lawyer Andrew Moxie, who is representing Turner, said today he hopes there's another alternative.
