It's certainly one of our most anticipated projects, and although that debut teaser really didn't tell us much, the upcoming edition of Game Informer most certainly will.
As Kotaku reports, the figure you see on the cover of the magazine isn't Altair, the protagonist from the original Assassin's Creed. It may look a lot like him - clothed the way he is - but that's actually Ezio, "a young noble who lost his family to rival families." Details fresh from the feature include: many more weapons including a spear and axe, the ability to swim in water (kinda like the upgrade in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas), "16 unique mission types" (Pickpocketing and Eavesdropping are gone), and the addition of real-life historical figures like Machiavelli. You'll have to pick up the magazine later this month to read the rest, but it's already shaping up to be a definite step up from the original. We adored the first one, contrary to the claims against it, and we have no doubt that Ubisoft will produce a stellar sequel. We kinda wanted to have Altair back, but in retrospect, he didn't have much of a personality and we can probably see a lot of him in Ezio. And we absolutely love the idea of playing in 15th-century Venice; the possibilities seem endless, and it's a damn good thing Ezio can swim, right?
We'll bring you more on Assassin's Creed 2 whenever the info becomes available; you can be sure that it's pretty damn high on our priority list.
Assassin's Creed II (or Assassin's Creed 2) is an upcoming sandbox-style action-adventure video game being developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft, the sequel to Assassin's Creed. It is set to be released worldwide Christmas 2009[4][2] on the Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Wii and Xbox 360 platforms.[4][2]
While not much is known of the plot yet, it has been confirmed that the player will assume the role of a nobleman and assassin named Ezio Auditore de Firenze. Like in the first game, Ezio is an ancestor of Desmond Miles, the modern assassin that has been captured by Abstergo Industries; as well as being a descendant of his ancestor Altaïr.[5] Ezio is a young noble who lost his family to rival families.
He is shown to have dual assassin's blades. The game is set to take place in Renaissance Italy, during the Carnival of Venice in the year 1476, which is 285 years after the first game.[6] Like Assassin's Creed, characters based on historical figures will be present in the game including Leonardo da Vinci, Niccolò Machiavelli, Caterina Sforza, and Lorenzo de' Medici.[6]
Locations mentioned thus far as being included in the game are Venice, Florence, the Tuscan countryside and Rome.[6] Specific landmarks include St Mark's Basilica, the Grand Canal, the Little Canal, and the Rialto Bridge.[6]
Ubisoft's Yves Guillemot officially confirmed that Assassin's Creed II was in development on November 26, 2008 during company's financial performance report.[7] This was followed by Michael Pachter speculating in GameTrailers' "Bonus Round" that game would change its setting to the events of the French Revolution, which turned out to be false.[8]
A promotional video was released by Ubisoft on April 16 showing a skull, some hidden blade designs, and da Vinci's flying machine on a scroll.[9]
Altair is still involved. Ezio trained from tenets/rules/books that altair wrote. This is going to rock.
