The New York Cosmos played in the North American Soccer League which existed from 1968 to 1984. It was the premier soccer league of North America. Giorgio Chinaglia left Lazio to join the New York Cosmos. Many European players left Europe in the 1970s after playing for the World Cup to make better money in the North American Soccer League.

@54spiritedwill54 so true!

In the NASL's intent of "Americanizing" the game, yes, they had cheerleaders. The league folded in '84.

Don't know why, but during introductions most of the fans loved to boo Chinaglia.
There was nothing like going to a Cosmos game in the late '70's and early - mid 80's.
I was at the very last game in '85 against Lazio in the pouring rain when only 1000 fans showed up and they had just cancelled the next game between the Cosmos and West Germany.
