Ah, makes sense now. I had heard Ray based "I Got A Woman" on a gospel tune but I had never heard it til now. Thanks for the great post and the info!
-
@erolbrown Exactly. That's why I love the internet. I've been exposed to alot of great music. I probably wouldn't even been into Ray without it.

@MikeMandaville lol i don't believe that happens for singing happy birthday, but good point, it is doing business and reworking a song is a form of homage and signal of respect and appreciation

Millions of dollars made in the recording industry. Some 7 million combined youtube views for versions of I Got a Woman, some 35 million for Gold Digger. And it all started with this tune. People should stop bitching about Ray Charles vs. Kanye on those videos, and realize how good the music itself is, and appreciate the hell out of these guys for giving us this amazing tune.

Must be jesus to I got a women to golddigger
-
Now I ain't saying she's a a gold digger. But she ain't messing with a broke Jesus.
-
Now I can understand church folks were so mad at Ray. My grandmother to this day says Ray cant sing and a sell out. She has the same feeling about Aretha Franklim jumping to "Rhythm and Blues."

Lyrics?? Please!!!

Before accusing Ray of ripping someone off, give a listen to Josh White's There's a man goin around taking names, written by Leadbelly.it was recorded in the 30' long before the Southern Tones did It must be Jesus....musicians have used each other lyrics, melodies, chord progressions for since the beginning.

Regardless, I still love I Got A Woman.

@d820m Yeah. It was recorded by the Southern Tones in 1954

That Ray Charles somehow "ripped off" the original composer of "It Must Be Jesus" by turning it into "I Got A Woman" is nonsense! Everytime someone sings "I Got A Woman", the original composer of "It Must Be Jesus" receives a check in the mail! Within the music industry, there is a name for this type of activity. It is called "doing business"! Everytime a waiter sings "Happy Birthday" to a customer, the original composer receives a check in the mail! ASCAP, BMI and SESAC protect composers!
love this song!!!

if this is the song that became I Got A Woman, then it came out BEFORE 1957..because I Got A woman came out in 1955
