  • Nitty Gritty Dirt Band made it famous, but it was written by Jerry Jeff Walker.

  • @gwhitetrans thank you for that information I'm sure it will be of help to me and others in the future.....

  • @flowerlady35 I was surprised to read it was "made famous by the late great Sammy Davis Jr." I know he did it, but not very popular by him. As the Dirt Band says in their concerts (still touring after 45 years), Mr. Bojangles is what got them started on a string of hits.

  • @gwhitetrans Apparently I'm older than you so I just remember Sammy Davis singing this on all the variety shows back in the day.......No one else has mentioned that it was made popular by the Dirt Band (I do know them also-but not for that) and there are 46,069 views - can you really tell me of all these people that viewed it---no one mentioned the Dirt Band except you >???????? That's curious.....!!!!!!!

  • Flowerlady what about solitary man, guess one of the best song of ND, and the best to me, BE.

  • @millotico I'm working on Solitary Man...it takes time....Alyce V

  • Neils version is by far the best, alas Im partial to his GREAT Talant, along with his version of " He aint heavy Hes my brother IMHO

  • @gwhitetrans - This song was written and first recorded by Jerry Jeff Walker in 1968 & was MADE FAMOUS by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. In fact, it was made SO famous by them, that it is their signature song. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band put it on the map, and it was famous long before Davis ever recorded it as a novely song. I was singing this song in Folk clubs & Coffee houses in the late 60s & early 70s - where it was a staple in everyone's repertoire.

  • @flowerlady35 It is curious, but maybe country fans weren't viewing it.

  • @flowerlady35 I'm 67. the Dirt Band members are all 64, 65, and 66.

  • Nina Simone...now that is sweet!
