His name is Chris Masterson and his wife Eleanor Whitmore is also on guitar (though she played various instruments on this tour, her primary instrument is fiddle.) Chris was with Sun Volt for awhile, and they have been doing gigs as a duo. They are from Texas (Houston, I think). He also backed up Justin Townes Earle on a Buddy Holly tribute, and you may have seen that here on outube.
Are you sure it was that early? That was the end of the Mountain tour. I have heard a few bootlegs from the Transcendental Blues tour, and they have other women as tour/duet partners. Maybe it was just a few shows? I do know (from the biography by St..John if it is accurate) that he was very involved with another woman for a few years (about 1999-2003) and TB is dedicated to her (Sara), so I don't think the sparks started with Moorer until the mid-2000's tour.
@nilradem They have been touring together since before they were `officially`` together. She opened for him back in 1998 or 99 and was spell bounding during her opening act when I saw them, and this is when I first heard of her. Amazing.
True - I didn't mean to minimize their talent. In fact, I think that in Allison's case, it is a misuse of her talents. I worry that she is sidelining her talents to support Steve's at the moment. I do think the choice to tour together was about supporting the relationship, rather than an artistic decision. Eleanor's contributions to the band were essential on this tour, not as sure about Allison. Though the format w/o opener gave us an entire evening of Steve, which was great!
@Ullarobinlilly The "girls" are onstage because they are amazing musicians -- instrumentalists, vocalists, the whole package. Saw them live last night. Thank goodness Steve appreciates great talent and is eager to share it.
@nilradem Oh I thank you for the information, I didnt know that. I just wondered. Always good to have friends and family around :-) Thanks. Have a good one!
That and it was a way for Steve to take his wife Allison Moorer on tour. I will say that Eleanor Whitmore on fiddle (tenor guitar here, I think) really was a great addition to the lineup for the tour, which I saw a couple weeks ago. And she is married to Chris Masterson, the guitarist, and is friends with Allison, so I think it was keeping it all in the family.
