To help those in need, we need to empower them.
An education is the most empowering thing that a person can be given, for knowledge truly is power.
Poverty, violence, abuse, over-population, disease; all of these problems and more are statistically inversely proportional to levels of education. Educated people, and educated nations, are thus empowered to transcend a life of mere survival. Educated people and educated nations are empowered to help themselves.
Its time to treat the cause of the problems, not just the symptoms.
So imagine if we were to create an online video education resource that was free to the whole world.
Imagine a self-organising, growing, democratic repository of all the world's factual knowledge, at every level of education.
Any qualified teacher or school could submit a video lesson on any subject in their own language. The lesson they submit would be subject to the open, democratic ranking system and scrutiny of the site.
Passionate, inspirational, fascinating video lessons would be featured on the front page.
Every child given a laptop under the One Laptop Per Child project would have access to a rich, empowering world of knowledge. From learning basic language and numeracy, through to learning different languages, through to advanced theoretical physics.
Imagine using
-the video capability and social networking functions of YouTube.com
-the hive-like democratic rating systems of sites like digg.com
-and the transparent, bottom-up, self-organising, multi-lingual power of Wikipedia
to create a website that would be the catalyst for one of the greatest transformations of human existence in history; a website that would bring about a true global enlightenment: YouTube.edu

yes, there is an educational category in youtube's existing site, but what I'm proposing is a system whereby full curriculum's would be available, people could learn new languages, and there would be dedicated functionalities to facilitate learning (such as interactive tests).
If you look over there to the right in the 'more info' link there's a more full explanation than I could fit into the 30 second video limit.
Thx for your feedback :-)
