Here we get into a hierarchy of information. Being from a Western tradition of organized thought, I place the logically provable over assumptions of intent. I cannot be sure that Shadowsoldior knew the full story or that Colbert's campaign had legal credibility, so I filled him in at the factual level. You assert that he didn't mean what his words suggest: a plausible assumption, but an assumption still. While this is an arcane discussion, it's been enjoyable, and I thank you for your time.

What I meant by putting the definition in the context of American politics is that there is no legal difference between a joke candidate and a so-called "serious" candidate; every person who registers with an electoral commission is a legal candidate, and it's up to voters (whose behavior in a voting booth is an unknown factor) to choose one candidate. I take "actual" to mean "existing in fact"*, and registration with the FEC means that one's campaign exists in fact.

A few questions here... How can you claim that American Politics has anything to do with the definition behind a word? To put simply, the context in which a comment is made does not define the definition. The definition is defined by multiple things, like tone. I think, according to the English definition of sarcasm, or satire, that "actually ran" does not mean "entered the race" but means "tried to win" the race.

'Cause you know, no one actually watched his show and figured this for themselves.

I believe I did. If you have some deeper knowledge of Shadowsoldior's diction or the meaning of the word "actually," I'd love to hear it. Colbert registered with the F.E.C., declared his candidacy, created a SuperPAC and was defeated in South Carolina's Democratic primary. If you're unfamiliar with American politics, that's what we call "actually" running for office.

He did run, and he was defeated in the South Carolina primary.
