  • Mary Lincoln's circumstances were much more posh than her husband's. She got closer to the frontier after they married. Lincoln made it to social gatherings in Lexington for the sake of his career; until he met her. At a cotillion, she was surprised to see him. He said: "don't really know why I'm here, Miss Todd, except I want to dance with you in the worst way". He waltzed on her toes, and when it ended, she said "Mr Lincoln, you have achieved your ambition".

  • and this is just how disconected the Lincoln family was from the average Southern house hold...and indeed, an American house hold.
