Catering offers an excellent opportunity to entrepreneurs
who have a love of cuisine and entertaining to get started
with their own small business.

In the following article we outline ten areas for
consideration before you jump into the business and start
advertising your services as a caterer.

1) Preparation - Firstly you should brush up on your food
preparation and you could enrol in a course on this subject
and in small business management as well. Next, you have to
research the market by looking at what your future
competitors are doing locally and assessing market niches
and demand. You should try to interview as many people as
possible to find out how you can cater to underserved market
segments or how you could improve on the service that other
businesses currently offer.

2) Experience - If you don't have a relevant qualification
or have not had relevant experience in the food, beverage
and hospitality industries then you should aim to get at
least several months worth of experience.

3) Complying with Local Health Authorities - make sure that
you have an in depth understanding of all the local health
and safety requirements that you must comply with as a
catering business owner.

4) A Place for Food Preparation - Having access to a
suitable kitchen space is essential if you are serious about
being a caterer. Is the kitchen in your home really
sufficient or will you need to lease a commercial kitchen or
find a restaurant that will let you use their premises after
hours?

5) Insurance Companies - Make sure that you are covered with
a suitable insurance policy in case things go wrong and you
are liable for damages.

6) Menus and Sourcing Supplies -Start thinking about the
kinds of menus you will offer prospective customers and
start to look at food providers and other sources of
ingredients in large volumes.

7) Be certain that you are able to cope with the stress of
catering by having a practice run. Invite some friends or
family members over for a fully catered meal so that you can
try out dishes on them and get their feedback.

8) Think about the kind of brand that you would like to
develop to distinguish your service from other market
players. Brainstorm some names and logo ideas and think
about the kind of business that you would like to be seen as
by the public.

9) Business Funding - Write down all of the expected start
up costs and put some thought into how you will cover them.
If you cannot finance your business alone then you may have
to look at other financing options.

10) Once you have given serious thought to the above factors
you can then proceed to write a plan for your business. A
well researched business plan will help you to compile your
research findings and prove to yourself that your idea is
workable. You will then have a road map to guide you along
and help you to set and reach goals.
