I read somewhere that the last police vehicles with the Winkworth bells were some old 1970s riot vans taken out of service in London in about 2002. I certainly remember that police vans and fire engines still used them when I was a kid in the late 70s/early 80s. Policemen all had whistles too up until the late eighties I think.

those were the best days in British Policing.

Oh bum! I wish that I was old enough to remember when emergency vehicles had them bells. They sound so much better than the crappy sirens they have today.

@bgibb101 The bell is called a Winkworth Bell and was found on everything from the Humber Super Snipe seen here, to the Wolseleys and Ambulances.

Apparently the actual "blue lamp" seen in the film is now over the entrance to Paddington Green police station.

its funny, even in some of the early episodes of the sweeney they were still using bells rather than sirens on the police cars
Twenty five years later and you'd have Jack Regan and the Sweeney doing a car chase just like that.
