Newsweek article
The relative decline of American education at the elementary- and high-school levels has long been a national embarrassment as well as a threat to the nation's future. Once upon a time, American students tested better than any other students in the world. Now, ranked against European schoolchildren, America does about as well as Lithuania, behind at least 10 other nations. Is this the fault of the Teachers Union protecting bad teachers? Could there be another agenda like privatization of schools? BMSTV host Maurice Carver discusses the issue with guest Lorie Jones.

  • I am a teacher and everybody says fire the bad teacher but the lady brings a good point there are circumstances beyond their control. Case in Point I had taught for three years when the Clark County School District decided to put students who had no right being in certain classes because they failed the previous class somtimes more than once. I had 92% of my geometry students passing then they sent me a whole of students who had right to be there and the passing rate dropped to below 50%.

  • Excellent points. Amazing the attn paid 2 the issue of "bad teachers." NO ONE enters the profession 2 b bad or lazy. No1 is stupid enough 2: teaching is 1 of the HARDEST careers out there. No1 enters it 2 get paid 4 easy work or 2 get rich. Teaching doesn't work like that! Any1 w/ brains should then go 2 the next obvious question: WHY are the "bad" teachers "lousy"? WHY??? Is professional development effective? R there mentor teachers? Administrative issues? "They're bad" is TOO EASY.

  • We do not need privatization in our schools anymore than we need it in the justice system. Seems to me, everyone plays the blame game, but no one wants to fix it. Everything begins at home. The parents must be involved in their kids education and back the teacher up. But the system must provide the proper support for teachers. updated text books, smaller classes, and yes better pay. Whats good for the teachers is good for the students.

  • The truth is American Government doesn't want any underclass getting a proper education, just like everything else in America your quality of life is predicted by your capital worth! On top of that system, blacks are not to be taught about their actual contribution to the this nation and will not see or hear of any possitive images of blacks just the ole MLK theme every black history month! That's it! They will be taught to believe that black is inferior unless they assimilate and be pawns!

  • Unfortunately the curriculum will still be European Caucasoid Supremacist idealism taught over lost young black minds. Creating more black failures due to one sided and supportive teaching system! So you can throw bad teachers out, but the institution will still fail and degrade the minds of black children in America! Only the few will still struggle through the grips and become good tools for white corporate institutions! WE NEED OUR OWN SCHOOLS/ INSTITUTIONS... PERIOD!!!
