walk into an aikido dojo and challenge a black belt, best way to test its effectiveness, if u beat him with your street fighting then there ya go, if u dont then......

the entire nature of aikido is to avoid conflict all together. secondly, it is to subdue your attacker without hurting him, or causing him a minimal amount of pain or injury (enough to keep your self safe and to have your attacker eventually quit their aggressive intentions). it is essentially a police officer putting cuffs on someone and kindly sitting them in the back of the squad car. O Sensei studied Daito-ryu, aiki-jujitsu, judo and other arts. He also served in the armed forces.

@ukmale164 yup.. but i doubt a black belt will entertain an aggressor unless really really provoked.. and it would be no match at all.. another option is a green belt or a purple belt or even the white belts (beginners).. don't challenge the yellow belts and up, they're defense is too much for a street fight..

@elendless absolutely right. its a self defence MA. there are no competitions etc. in aikido. i did it once so i know about it. but its reeeally effective once you get your agressor. and thats the problem. if hes quik ore very agile. you will have problems if you arent steven seagal and have a dan grade.

@Terminator632 i know, i watch his movies only to see those slick moves !! but would still love to see a controlled real tournament fight or something.

@yourtube20061 watch steven seagal :D he wears the 7th dan in aikido and uses some techniques in his movies.

aikido is not about "how its shown" to viewers, it's not about competition, its not about defeating the opponent. Aikido is a way of life, the way of harmony, where nobody gets destructed, and both parts can continue their ways peacefully

@shmina1 are u suggesting that aikido is the only martial arts with bone breaking techniques, or that those martial arts which have competitions are not "dangerous enough" ? a muay thai kick, a karate chop to the neck, a tkd kick, a jiu jitsu lock and many other things can be quite damaging and certainly break bones. they still have competitions and post "real" fight videos.

@ukmale164 i am no black belt or equivalent in any art, so me challenging an aikido black belt would be quite stupid. but if i come across a controlled fight where other martial art fighters have a fight with an aikido master, then things will be more clear.like i said before, i feel it is good, but i havent seen any vids yet.
