  • how do you attach this to your frame? do you use glue?

  • I assume you mean my bracing structure behind the board. I would actually attach the bracing first before attaching the paper. I glue 1x2 (or 1x4) using standard wood glue.

  • Thank you for making these encaustic videos. They are very well done and helpful. I took an encaustic class in college a few years ago, and I've been wanting to get back into it. This is the method I was taught for making a white ground, but I was just wondering if it works to paint directly onto wood. I would like to see the wood grain through the painting in some areas. Thanks!

  • You don't have to have a ground, they are often used when you want a solid white background to start. Some people also like the way layering of transparent wax over a white ground provides an unusual depth to the painting. This is especially effective with collage techniques. I often don't use a ground and paint on 1/2 inch russian birch plywood.

  • Thanks,

You are correct, but you have to mix it and cook it, it's a bit of a hassle, so I'm assuming people will just skip to the new paintable ground from RF.

  • Can you please tell me the name of the glue you are using. I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

  • excellent explanations, giving all the" hidden" details many skip putting forward.

    thank u

  • This is very helpful!

  • Thanks so much for your series on preparation for Encaustic painting. You've explained everything very clearly and I'm more confident now about starting out. Your videos are just what I needed!

  • Evans Encaustics in California makes a great ground called "Holy Grail"
