Montana State Land Board approves an $86 million bid by Arch Coal for the 572 million tons of coal in the Otter Creek Tracts in Southeastern Montana. Governor Schweitzer, one of the five board members, who likes the idea, says, it could influence his upcoming decision on cuts intended to keep the state budget from going into the red next year.
$86 million??? CRIMINALS. A ton of coal costs between $10 and $50 per ton. So worst case scenario, $10 times 572 million equals $5.72 BILLION. Best case that coal is worth $28.5 BILLION. Why the hell are politicians getting away with this kind of crap every single day? The state should just open up a coal mining business and hire locals, pay them $200k+ a year with benefits/retirement. Also, develop environmentally safe mining technologies and while your at it clean up other natural areas. Geez
