For the sofa-surfer experts here, have you ever tried to legitimately duck-dive a big wave gun? Try it sometime; Guaranteed free ride backwards over the falls with a large, hard object that can knock you out/break bones. When it's big, you're on a big wave gun and you're caught inside, you gotta ditch sometimes. Don't paddle behind people and if you have to ditch, try to keep from throwing your board in other peoples' direction.

I can imagine myself duckdiving my 5'6" and coming out of the water at the top of the wave and going over the falls harder than just ditching my board and swimming to the bottom....and plus, its almost a natural reaction to just throw your board and hightail it underneath the water.

wow that must have really knocked the wind out of you.. I've been in a similar position and it's horrible, once your board goes... then you go.. over the falls to the bottom, then back to the top, only to get flipped and sucked down again... you come up and look for your board, meanwhile it's all foamy around you and the water is super deep all of a sudden.. if you lucky there won't be another mega tron wave coming to take you for the ride again.. talk about getting salt water in your sinuses!

Ditching the board and dive the vertical wall of water (and swim) is a normal thing to do in that situation, when you are just in the wrong place at the wrong time and cant make it over the lip. Pros do it all the time padling mavericks with guns. That wave was very massive and it grew that big very fast, they all thought they would made it :)

I think the guy on the inside could've made it duckdiving b/c it was steeper, but the guy out on the 'shoulder' was toast either way. And, yeah, I've duck-dove a 9'6" gun before in a steep face(I live in Hawaii). Those shoulder-y ones are harder to do w/o getting pitched.

Trying to duckdive a try gun is like trying to duckdive with a floatation vest on! Easier said than done. Some "mini guns" you can duck dive.

Most the locals at Blacks when its this size are not even adept surfers but good to great ones. Sometimes you will get a kook out there.

This compared to Sunset? Wow, what you smoking? But still Blacks at this size is noooo joke...

@82ChrisM Actually i'm afraid you're wrong, im not American and my surfing is ok enough to paddle out at big Blacks,and sunset which I have done in my time! which is why I made the comparison! the waves are not similar I was actually referring to the volume of water in a wave like Blacks and Sunset,the locals at Blacks aren't muppets and will use the correct boards for the given day,and on this day they're all riding guns. How much big water experience have you got? Not much by the sounds of it!
