China will complete its second largest hydroelectric dam project on the Jinsha River, a tributary of the Yangtze River, in Yunnan Province next year. when finished the Xiluodu dam will stand 278m tall, making it the third tallest dam in the world. It comes at a price tag of 67.5 billion yuan (US$10.6 billion). The dam consists of 21 towers housing 18-turbines and will have an installed capacity of 12.6 GW which will be used to help feed China's energy hungry and heavily populated east regions. An estimated 100,000 people living behind the dam will be forced to relocate.
