In 2007, Karen Putz pulled into a drive thru to get a milkshake with her son. She thought it was going to be a simple visit to the restaurant - she was denied service and went home and blogged about it. She advocated about the issue for over a year and then never spoke about it for some reason.

After we heard about this incident, we got to know Karen and found her to be a very reasonable person who simply wanted basic service. We surveyed the deaf and hard of hearing community back in 2004 and found that this is a major issue for them and as a result Inclusion Solutions has worked hard to try and convince the restaurant industry to provide some basic accommodations. Our OrderAssist product cost less than $1000 installed and so we hope companies will begin to welcome this important market

  • I was a store manager for a franchise. Looking back on my training...I was never trained by my franchisee\company on the ADA. How to serve someone with a disability should be mandated training and followed up on by all business owners

  • Culver's kicks ass.

  • I know these people. Best friends with the whole family. I am shocked that they did that to Karen like that. They never did that to my family. Yeah, my family is deaf, and we go up to the window. The people did not care if we went up to the window, the man took our order. I am shocked that the man did not take their order. Unbeliviable.

  • I know this woman. Best friends with the whole family. That Culver's is 15 minutes away from their house. I know that because I live by that Culver's.

  • That is right! That is Steak N' Shake. :)

  • Good story. Maybe other franchises will get a clue.

  • dude- her speech is so good, the guy at the drive thru window probably didnt believe she was actually deaf.he "threatened" to call the cops because he was just frustrated with a customer who didnt want to "follow policy". i know, i know-- how ironic that her excellent speech led to SUCH miscommunication.

  • honestly her speech is SO good, that it may have seemed she was playing a joke/ being an annoying customer to the guy at the window... thus he was fed up and 'threatened to call the cops'. its just so ironic that her amazing speech led to such miscommunication.

  • I've always wanted to try culvers. I've heard their butter burgers are amazing
