I recorded this the other day when I visited Aalborg Zoo with a friend and her dog.
Before we went there, she told me that her dog, Nala, made friends with a sea lion.
Nobody believed that it really happened and I must say that it really surprised me as well when I saw the reunion of the this odd couple :)

  • who brings a dog to the zoo?

  • @sleibhin325 Anyone who has managed to socialize their dog well enough to do so might.

It might be different in the states but here it is allowed and quite common, unless your dog is unable to handle the situation.

It's only a matter of the dogs owner taking responsibility for their dog.

If they suspect their dog would be disturbed/aggressive in this situation, they should not bring it.

But if not, then why shouldn't the dog come along? I doubt the animals mind.

  • To some extent, I agree with you.

Not all that goes on in a zoo is good.

But at the same time, I don't think keeping sea lions in big tanks with outdoor space above is much different than keeping a dog (descendant of wolves) as a house pet, not allowing him to hunt and roam free.

Wild animals caputered and put on display will suffer, for sure - I don't approve.

But sea lions like these have been born in captivity and know no other life... just like a pet dog.

Anyway, feel free to disagree :)

  • @Hedefar I strongly disagree with the statement about dogs. They have been hugely domesticated over hundreds of years making their chances of survival in the wild VERY slim. Their are still Wild dogs like the ones in Africa, If a dog is properly walked and looked after it will be living a better life then it could ever have in the wild.

  • @reebok53 I see I was not clear in my latest post a couple of months back. I didn't mean that keeping dogs as pets is a bad thing. I am a cat and dog person myself.

I just tried to compare the situation of this sealion (born and raised in the zoo) to that of a domesticated dog.

As long as it's keepers take their responsibility seriously and fulfills the animal's needs, I have no problem with captivity. This goes for dogs as well as animals in the zoo.

  • the only thing seperating that sea lion from its dinner is a sheet of glass

  • Would've made my day if they started barking at each other

  • That sea lion looks hungry....or horny.

  • Made friends? If I know anything about sea lions, it's figuring out how to get its fangs on the little guy!

Mind you, it's looking very cute while doing so.

  • @IdealIdeas9991 Yeah, you can think you're smart.

  • from our point it may look they are playing but here is how it really went:

Dog: come here, i wanna eat u..u and all that fat

    Sea Lion: it's blubber genius..o_o

    Dog: wuteves

Sea Lion: haha u can't get me and my blubber xP

  • This isn't bonding. This is curiosity and boredom. Seals are really smart and to be stuck in captivity, with very little mental stimulation, it's obvious they will look for a means of entertainment. Both dog and sea lion are curious.
