Is there really so much confusion about what an RPG is? Really? As a member of a well-established adventure game creators' community, King's Quest (and all Sierra "Quest" games) are ADVENTURE GAMES, not RPGs. Period.
Actually not 100% true. There was one game they made called hero's quest (later changed names due to copywrite I believe to quest for glory) that did qualify as an rpg, had a status screen with stats and everything.
Hero's Quest (Quest for Glory) does break the mold. I consider it an RPG/adventure hybrid. Excellent series... including the remake of QfG2 y AGD Interactive. :D
Bard's tale on an old Tandy computer. I also had kings quest 1-4. R.P.G. stands for "role playing game," period. That term also PRE -DATES computer games. You can nitpick it, but (bottom line) you are putting yourself in the position of a character that has to complete various quests & trade/buy objects to get from area to another F.F. series had both elements of KQ & games
1) the only zelda that qualified as an rpg (instead of action/adventure like you see it classified in general) was the second for the nes. That had a lvling system. 2) no you don't "see" your char on screen in BT so you can't see them attack, but the difference between onscreen movement and movement through a 3d world first person style is insignificant. so yes if your going to nitpick about not being able to see your char attack theres no movement, otherwise there is.
(cont) 3)yes rpg pre dates computer games, to pen & paper versions that included stats and character development. If you want to define rpg only by the terms of taking the role of another character that has to complete various objectives any platformer, shooter, sports game, fighting game or game period qualifies as an rpg. Now when put in context of a video game, a rpg contains some sort of 'improvment' system where by something, even just a weapon, 'lvls' up. Otherwise it's an adventure game

w/ stats, levels etc. Many ppl consider Zelda to be an RPG. The original Zelda, technically, was more like KQ
