You got lucky. I would recommend you use Trevor and the holy water + double or triple shot. You wouldn't need to be lucky or even fast.

obviusly i use the holy water but i have beat this boss with simon and just the whip. i got lucky because the boss kept trying to change into alcurd but got stuck that shit was weird

I tried this method, and got nowhere. I agree, the holy water is a much safer tactic. Plus, Virtual console has made it impossible to do moves from the NES or SNES.

you can also easy kill him by keeping the holy water from the previous level. you just have to beat the grim reaper with it prior to this level and get through the level with the doppelganger without dying
