City Dive, Inc. is a 501c3 community outreach organization whose mission is to Engage, Equip and Empower families in inner city communities to transform their lives and community. The organization is the official outreach ministry of New Birth-Charlotte and its founder/CEO is none other than Bishop Terrell L. Murphy.
In 2009, City Dive was approached by the Charlotte Housing Authority to act as the first faith-based organization to partner with them through a HOPE VI initiative. HOPE VI is a federal program designed to revitalize distressed public housing through demolition and reconstruction. HOPE VI grants are made to public housing authorities based on a competition administered by HUD. Many HOPE VI developments include households with a mix of incomes and provide supportive services.
This initiative will enable 275 families to "move forward" to reach self-sufficiency. City Dive's role includes the adoption of all 275 families. Adoption meaning providing empowerment courses to include (being a great neighbor, career development, financial empowerment and senior empowerment). Additional 600 City Dive Servant Leaders agreed to mentor the families through their transition which includes the relocation from Boulevard Homes into communities throughout the city of Charlotte, NC.
This video highlights receipt of an over $20 million grant for redevelopment of Boulevard Homes as well as shares results and progress City Dive has made with the families since the 2009 initial engagement.
