I forgot how bad it was growing up there. As a kid, U tune all that stuff out. The world is just 1 big play ground. But yes, it was like a war torn environment. I was born in 62 & by the late 60's, people with any money at all fled cuz the gangs & heroin addicts were making life unlivable! 163rd street's McKinely & Forest Projects were my stomping grounds. P.S. 140, & 146, JHS 120, Morris HS all bring back memories.

The Bronx had the unique circumstance of building owners torching their buildings for insurance, I doubt we'll ever see a first world city decay like that.

Man I would have loved to have seen that. It honestly feels like when I am at the foot of the mountains here in Wyoming looking up at the peaks. It feels part of me.

What I can't understand is why the city didn't just tear down all the burned out and abandoned buildigns in the Bronx.

I took a job about 15 years ago walking the streets of the South Bronx; Yankee Stadium, Westchester Ave, Prospect Ave, Willis Ave, Hunts Point etc. I was the only white guy there and some folks thought I was a cop. Everyone passed on the job except me. I was there about 1 year and transferred out for better opportunity. I never experienced any crime and never felt afraid but I sure knew there was crime and kept my eyes open. The folks were simple and nicer and less demanding than in the suburbs.
