Abseiling Towards a Lava Lake - Extreme Video From Marum Volcano, Ambrym, Vanuatu! Video highlights from recent trip where we tried to descend into the crater at Marum volcano to document the raging lava lake up close.

Expedition was lead by Geoff Mackley with Drew Bristow and Johno Smith acting as the climbing / abseiling experts and Bradley Ambrose and Daniel Lacy working the cameras as was I.

  • If that volcano went, you boys would be obliterated ! Not the cleverest shit goin round.

  • @cgraf83 Volcano with an active lava lake like that would not just explode, you need a build up of pressure / collapse of lava dome etc to trigger large explosive eruption. The energy here's being released through the lava lake at the time that was shot.

  • I love volcanoes, and what you did was spectacular! I can't wait to see the next one!

  • @rosesorchids Thanks for the feedback, glad you enjoyed the video!

  • ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE, James!!! Nice way to make up for the paltry typhoon season!

  • @vmax135 Thanks Michael!! This typhoon season has been really slow so it was nice to be able to go out and shoot some alternative material!

  • @volcanodiscovery Thanks for your feedback. I guess since I'm so senseless I'll stop recommending your website to people who contact me about visiting volcanoes...

  • You know what we need to do with this place. Plunk a power station right on top of the thing! Use that lava to flash water into high quality steam and then expand it through a few 400 MW GE steam turbines. I'll bet that lake is good for a few gigawatts electrical! I'll bet you'd have problems getting a EPA permit. The CO2 emissions from volcanoes are furious.

  • looks pretty hot =)

  • You could probably talk me into going to the rim, but I'm not sure you could talk me into going in. It does seem a bit crazy, but I'm sure it was well worth the risk. Great footage James.

  • this just shows how incredibly vicious Mother Nature can be on all of us and the things we do to provoke her.

Nature may be awsome but to do something like this? I mean indeed if that volcanic beast exploded you indeed would be sent into oblivion perminantly.

  • You guys, are out of your fucking lunitic minds!. You should be put into a mental institution and then be given a session of electroshock therapy for so long that you only have a brain the size of a walnut., which would be fried to a lump of coal!

  • How hot was the lava, approximately? Not hot enough to burn the rope off apparently.

  • @TyphoonHunter Yeah. What James said!

  • As both a volcanologist and a climber, this is pretty much the most awesome thing ever. Way to go!

  • HOT DAMN!!!
