The Kobalt Double Drive reversible ratcheting screwdriver is the rotator or twister type, i.e. rotating the handle back and forth will turn the fastener in only one direction. There are several ratchets on the market that also have this feature, e.g.: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkzxkcFz1kQ.

When the collar is held, the Double Drive mechanism is engaged and the shaft turns at twice the speed of the handle, 'overdriven' in other words. This is nothing new. The Spec Tools Overdriver works the same way, but at four times the speed, and is made in USA, not in Asia: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7EY2Zd4XvM .

Kobalt is a private label of Lowes. http://www.lowes.com
Good link from the Lowes website: http://webapps.easy2.com/cm2/flash/generic_index.asp?page_id=36218259 .

I bought one for $19.95 locally. I like it. From the feel of it is seems to be the 'gearless' type. The tool feels a little heavy compared to other ratcheting screwdrivers I own.

The set at the store does not include the holster that comes with the same set if purchased online. However, you can buy the holster separately, but only online: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSzA9xH6XA4

  • What size torx/star bits does it come with?

  • @ZeroReviews1

    T10, 15, 20, 25

  • I'm giving a One-Armed Jerk one of these.

  • @buddhavskungfu

    Yeah, screw him.

  • "star" lol. its called torx dummy

  • @SgtMelonhawk

That's true, but the recess is often called star or 6-lobe because Torx is a registered trademark, owned by I think Acument Technologies, who also own the patents. Those who use the name or manufacture Torx fasteners or drive tools are supposed to be licensed. Calling the bits 'star' gets around that problem, sort of.

  • Does anyone else think its crazy to use 2 hands to make a screwdriver work?

  • There’s a stationary gear on the handle and top portion where the shaft attaches. The gears that spin in-between are like a socket wrench, they can each spin freely in 1 direction and not in the other. So, if the gears are mirrored, when the collar is loose it works like a regular screwdriver, when you hold the collar it works like a socket wrench does when it’s restricted. Kind of hard to explain but does that make sense?

  • Wonder why they covered up the word "Viper" on the valve cover of that engine? I don't see how that could cause any trouble for them. No worse than a car wax manufacturer using a Mustang or whatever for an example in a commercial.

  • @ilovetosm420ke the collar must act like a clutch or release of one gear so the other can drive the driver. Since the direction is determined by the switch, it remains in a release or 'clutched' position until the handle goes in the switched direction of choice. So the clutch must be re-engaged when going in that direction for the handle.

    that's my SWAG.
