A couple of months ago I had stopped by to visit my mother at a rehabilitation center on Orange County. Upon my return to my vehicle to head back to the city of Perris I found this a 'microcentrum californicum', aka. california katydid, which had flown down from the trees onto the windshield of my Mercury mountaineer. I had heard their chirping prior to my entry into the center; I'm still longing to see this particular species up close while it is stridulating :). These particular full-winged 'bush' crickets are quite the fliers.
The males produce a series of clicks, differentiated from a single, sharp courtship pulse ['TTSST']. The females respond to the males with a single moderate 'snap' sound. The ratio is usually 4 females to one male...Hmmm 0_0.
Two minutes into the video notice the shadowy outline of it's abdomen (body) within the contrast to its large leaf-like wings... very cool don't you think?
