The Impreza is a compact car from Japanese automaker Subaru.

Unlike its competitors, Subaru has always offered all-wheel-drive as an option on the Impreza, which is normally a front-wheel-drive car.

The first generation Impreza began production in 1993 and is still being made as of 2009.

The standard Impreza uses a normally aspirated motor, unlike the more performance oriented WRX version, which uses a turbocharged motor.

The Impreza was initially offered in the United States with a 1.8-liter and later a 2.2-liter boxer engine.

All Imprezas from 1997 onward are all-wheel-drive.

The engine in an Impreza is normally aspirated, so it doesn't respond quite as well to engine tuning.
By far the best improvement you can make is installing an aftermarket turbo kit,

like the one from SPO Motorsports. You can also rebuild the motor with high compression pistons and more aggressive internals like higher revving cams and a lighter flywheel.

This route may cost more than turbocharging or even swapping in a motor from a WRX.

A short shifter that shortens the throw of the gear lever is a good idea if you are going to be driving aggressively.

Along with more power comes the need for more handling and braking.

To help the car corner flatter with less body roll, install a set of aftermarket swaybars.

You can also install strut braces that reduce chassis flex.

Larger wheels like the ones from Prodrive that measure 18 by 7.5 inches are a terrific addition when combined with wider, stickier rubber.
