I'm sorry this only audio but there is precious little footage of The Pattos.

This had to be done, though. It has been remarked that, if you ever imagined you could play the guitar, there are two albums you should hear first: 'Are You Experienced' and 'Hold Your Fire'.

So, from the latter document, here is, arguably, the finest bit of widdling ever commited to record.

  • This is what I call a Jammin' tune!

I'm kind of curious about Halsall's career, having heard him on the second Tempest album. It appears that he was one of the unsung guitar heroes of rock music. A shame, as this band could easily stack up against some of the young kids who've been putting out jams since Ollie's last day.

  • For all you need to know, Google 'Ollie Halsall' to find the Archive site

    :o)

  • Hi Bernie. Give it a few weeks till Spring is truly here ;o)

  • holy fuckin hell....NO-ONE played guitar like that back then....Ollie was MONSTER!

Alan Holdsworth totally copped his legato style.......wow....never heard this, just wow.

  • Loads more on the Monster at 'The Ollie Halsall Archive' site [google it] :o)

  • my older brother introduced me to this band in the 70s. I didn't appreciate how far they were ahead of their time til many years later. Now people say they've never heard of them, but all the american 70s and 80s guitar heros reference Ollie. This is Patto at their peak! Don't blink

  • holy shit man, who the HELL....is the lead guitar player? that solo blew me away!

  • One of my fav guitar breaks of all time. People ask me who my favourite players are and I usually come up with Beck, Trower, Nelson, Gibbons and Halsall. Everyone says, "Who's Halsall?" A sad indictment on the music industry. However, I do believe he was a little self-destructive.

  • great band

  • great guitarist!!

  • Great vocals, great guitar, great band. Saw them many times live, always different.

    Fantastic.

  • with all do respect to the great Ollie Halsall, I reject the notion that Allan Holdsworth copied or stole from Ollie. This has been batted about over the internet for decades and at the end of the day, people who know both players tend to agree that both men came up with different and distinct approaches to playing guitar with common aspects, like legato-style playing. There is just no way in hell that Ollie would have sounded like Allan on, say, Secrets or Metal Fatigue (and vice versa).

  • I don't think any of it would have worked this well without the four of them , everything together at the right time, I saw them at least a dozen times, Fantastic! Ollie's fingers were a blur on the fretboard. and his skill on the vibes was the same........... The one that seems to get overlooked is Mike Patto, this guy knew how to lead the band....

  • Ollie had only four years playing guitar when this was recorded. Just staggering.
