Where the astonishing technology and ingenuity of a country in the midst of an industrial revolution, was put to the task of making the most destructive killing machines the world had ever seen. More Americans were killed in the Civil War than in all other American wars combined. Ominously foreshadowing the horrors of the first World War, the guns of Civil War became the first truly modern weapons.

@SuperBluefire1 They were considered regular or new like the rifled barrels back then, as most were muzzleloaders and there were a few repeaters that were not as widely used. Also the more accurate rifles and lots more men then previous wars really started the use of more skirmishing and cover used, aswell as trenches and earthworks. They only standed in open ground firing back and forth early in the war.

Actually rifling was around forever before the civil war. In the American Revolution they used rifles with smooth bore muskets. If I remember correctly we beat the British with that combination.

@SuperBluefire1 We may have better weapons now...but if you are a true gun nut then you must own at least a modern copy of the Colt peacemaker or Winchester lever action rifle, and at least one cap and ball revolver. You are not a true gun nut until you've fired black powder rifles and revolvers. I love my modern semi-automatic weapons, but there is nothing like the charm of loading a cap and ball revolver and firing it.

@sheskiefry Where does it say we took the credit for rifling? Many americans know that the M1 was made by a Canadian-American, and many weapons around the world have little reliability but are used and loved by many soldiers for many reasons for example the S.A.S preferred the M16 over the L85. Please stop making it seem like the americans take the credit for everything.

again. the yanks want all the credit. Rifling invented by the Swiss and Germans. The revolutionary gun designs of both the world wars by the Germans (the springfield m1 bolt design was a mauser copy). The m1 garand was invented by a Canadian. The beretta is an italian design. Cartridged rounds were also invented by the French along with the minie ball. another reason showing how American gun design is over-rated. Even the ar-15 and m-60 gets 0 points for reliability.
